Proceeding Schengen Visa Application for Any Country from China

Applying for a Schengen visa from China is not simply a matter of collecting bank statements, reserving a hotel and selecting the nearest European embassy. A successful application begins much earlier—with the correct destination country, the appropriate visa category, the right consular jurisdiction and a travel plan that remains consistent across every supporting document.

This becomes particularly important in China, where different Schengen states use different application partners. Some applications are submitted through VFS Global, others through TLScontact, BLS International, country-specific visa centers or a government-operated online platform. Applicants must also follow the territorial jurisdiction connected to their actual place of residence or employment rather than choosing whichever visa centre has the earliest appointment.

A properly prepared application should allow the consular officer to understand the journey without reconstructing it from conflicting documents. The flight reservation, hotel booking, insurance policy, employment letter, bank activity and cover letter should describe one credible trip with the same dates, destinations and purpose.

No travel agency, reservation provider or document service can guarantee that a visa will be approved. The final decision belongs exclusively to the competent embassy or consulate. The practical objective is therefore to prepare an embassy-ready Schengen visa application that satisfies jurisdiction, completeness, credibility and documentary consistency requirements.

Do Chinese Citizens Need a Schengen Visa?

Chinese citizens holding an ordinary passport generally require a visa before travelling to the Schengen Area for tourism, business, family visits or other short stays.

The same application system may also be used by foreign nationals who legally reside in mainland China. However, a non-Chinese applicant will ordinarily need to prove lawful residence in China through a valid residence permit or another accepted immigration document. The competent embassy may refuse to accept an application from someone who is only visiting China temporarily and cannot demonstrate a genuine legal connection to the country.

A short-stay Schengen visa generally permits travel for a maximum of 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. It may allow travel throughout the Schengen Area, but it must be requested from the country that is legally competent to examine the applicant’s particular itinerary.

The 29 Countries Covered by the Schengen Visa

The Schengen Area currently comprises:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Ireland and Cyprus are members of the European Union but are not part of the common Schengen visa area. Applicants should not assume that a Schengen visa automatically replaces every separate entry requirement applicable to those countries.

Identify the Correct Schengen Country Before Booking an Appointment

Selecting the wrong embassy is one of the most consequential mistakes in a multi-country application. A visa application must be lodged with the Schengen state that is legally responsible for the trip.

Apply to the Only Schengen Destination

When the entire journey takes place in one Schengen country, the application belongs to that country.

Example: A traveller spending eight nights entirely in Austria should apply for an Austrian Schengen visa.

Apply to the Main Destination

When visiting more than one Schengen state, apply to the country that represents the main destination. This is usually determined by:

The principal purpose of the journey; or
The country where the traveller will spend the greatest number of nights.

Example: A business traveller spends two nights in Germany for a conference and four nights in France for tourism. If the conference is the principal reason for travelling, Germany may remain the competent state despite the longer stay in France. The purpose and itinerary must be assessed together.

Apply to the Country of First Entry When the Stay Is Equal

When the purpose is comparable and the applicant will spend an equal number of nights in two or more Schengen countries, the application normally belongs to the country through which the traveller first enters the Schengen Area.

Example: An applicant plans four nights in Spain and four nights in Portugal, entering through Madrid. Spain would ordinarily be the competent country.

The first-entry rule does not mean applicants can automatically apply to whichever Schengen country appears first on their flight reservation. It is relevant mainly when no single destination can otherwise be identified as the main destination. An application submitted to the wrong state may be returned without substantive examination.

Schengen Visa Types from China

Applicants should identify the correct visa category before arranging reservations, requesting employer documents or completing the application form. The required evidence changes according to the length, location and purpose of the journey.

Type A Airport Transit Visa

A Type A visa is designed for travellers who must pass through the international transit area of a Schengen airport while continuing to a destination outside the Schengen Area.

It does not permit the traveller to:

Enter the Schengen territory;
Leave the airport’s international transit zone;
Stay overnight outside the airport; or
Use the visa for tourism or business travel.

The requirement depends on the traveller’s nationality, transit airport, onward destination and possible exemptions. A person changing airports, collecting checked baggage or passing through border control may require a regular short-stay visa rather than an airport transit visa.

Applicants should verify the rules of the specific transit country before relying on a Type A visa.

Type C Short-Stay Schengen Visa

The Type C visa is the category used by most applicants travelling from China. It covers visits of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for purposes such as:

Tourism;
Visiting relatives or friends;
Business meetings;
Conferences and trade fairs;
Short professional training;
Cultural or sporting events;
Medical treatment;
Official visits; and
Certain short academic activities.

A Type C visa may be issued for one, two or multiple entries.

Single-Entry Visa

A single-entry visa normally allows one entry into the Schengen Area. After the holder exits the area, the visa cannot ordinarily be used again, even when some validity remains.

Double-Entry Visa

A double-entry visa permits two separate entries during its period of validity, subject to the authorized number of days.

Multiple-Entry Visa

A multiple-entry visa allows repeated entry while the visa remains valid. Each stay must still comply with the 90-days-in-180 rule.

Applicants requesting multiple entry should explain the genuine need for repeated travel and support it with previous travel history, business commitments, family circumstances or another credible recurring purpose. Requesting a long-validity visa does not create an automatic entitlement to receive one.

Type D National Long-Stay Visa

A Type D visa is issued under the national immigration law of an individual Schengen country for stays normally exceeding 90 days. It may be required for:

University study;
Long-term employment;
Research;
Family reunification;
Extended professional assignments;
Residence-related travel; or
Other country-specific long-stay purposes.

A national visa is not processed under one completely uniform Schengen checklist. Each country establishes its own supporting documents, permits, processing periods and appointment arrangements.

A valid Type D visa or residence permit may permit limited travel to other Schengen states, normally subject to the 90-days-in-180 rule and applicable border conditions. Applicants must therefore follow the national visa instructions of the country where they will live, work or study rather than using a general tourist checklist.

General Schengen Visa Requirements from China

Although individual embassies publish their own category-specific checklists, most short-stay applications require the following core documents.

Valid Passport

The passport should ordinarily:

Have been issued within the previous ten years;
Remain valid for at least three months after the intended departure from the Schengen Area;
Contain at least two blank visa pages;
Be undamaged and readable; and
Match the personal information entered on the application form.

Applicants should also provide copies of the passport information page and, where requested, copies of previous visas and entry stamps.

Completed Visa Application Form

The form must be completed accurately and signed wherever required. Information concerning employment, marital status, travel purpose, host, accommodation, entry point and travel dates must match the supporting documents.

Applicants should not leave a significant inconsistency unexplained merely because the form has limited space. A concise cover letter can clarify complex itineraries, sponsorship arrangements or unusual financial circumstances.

Recent Biometric Photograph

The photograph must comply with the destination country’s current specifications. A 35 mm × 45 mm color photograph is commonly requested, but applicants should follow the exact checklist published for their destination.

Travel Medical Insurance

The policy should generally:

Cover the entire Schengen Area;
Remain valid for the full proposed trip;
Provide at least €30,000 in medical coverage;
Cover emergency treatment and hospitalization; and
Include repatriation for medical reasons or death.

The applicant’s name, policy period, geographical coverage and insured amount should be visible on the certificate.

Flight Reservation or Proposed Travel Itinerary

The file should show a realistic route into and out of the Schengen Area. The itinerary should correspond with:

The application form;
Hotel dates;
Insurance coverage;
Approved employment leave;
Invitation dates; and
The stated main destination.

Most applicants should avoid purchasing a costly non-refundable ticket unless the competent authority expressly instructs them to do so. A flight reservation is not permission to travel, and it should never be fabricated, altered or presented for a journey the applicant does not genuinely intend to take.

Proof of Accommodation

Accommodation should be demonstrated for every relevant night through documents such as:

Hotel reservations;
Serviced-apartment bookings;
A host’s invitation;
Proof of privately owned accommodation;
An organized-tour confirmation; or
Another form accepted by the responsible embassy.

For a multi-country trip, the sequence of accommodation should create a continuous timeline without unexplained gaps or overlapping stays in distant cities.

Proof of Financial Means

The applicant must demonstrate the ability to pay for transport, accommodation and daily expenses. Depending on the embassy and travel category, evidence may include:

Recent personal bank statements;
Salary deposits;
Savings records;
Credit card statements;
Tax documentation;
Business ownership records;
Sponsorship evidence; or
Proof that certain expenses have already been paid.

A high closing balance alone does not necessarily establish financial credibility. Consulates may examine the origin, timing and pattern of funds. Large last-minute deposits should be documented rather than left unexplained.

Evidence of Employment or Social Status

Employed applicants commonly provide:

An employer letter;
Job title and start date;
Monthly salary;
Approved leave dates;
Purpose of travel where relevant;
Confirmation that the employee is expected to return; and
Employer contact details.

Company owners or self-employed applicants may need a business license, company registration, tax material, corporate bank evidence and proof of ongoing commercial activity.

Students may require an enrollment certificate and authorized absence. Retirees may provide pension or retirement evidence. Applicants without conventional employment should explain their financial position and reasons for returning to China.

Evidence of Intention to Return

A visa officer must be satisfied that the applicant will leave before the authorized stay expires. Relevant ties may include:

Continuing employment;
Active business responsibilities;
Current education;
Dependent family members;
Property or tenancy commitments;
Established financial activity;
Previous lawful travel; and
A specific reason to return after the trip.

No single document proves return intention in every case. The officer evaluates the file as a whole.

China-Specific Supporting Documents

Applicants submitting from mainland China should carefully review the locally harmonized checklist for their destination. Depending on nationality and circumstances, commonly requested documents may include:

Copy of the Chinese national identity card;
Copy of the household registration booklet or hukou;
Proof of residence in the relevant consular jurisdiction;
Chinese residence permit for non-Chinese nationals;
Employer’s business license or company registration;
Certified civil-status documents;
Notarized birth or marriage certificates;
Parental consent documents for minors; and
Translations into English or the language accepted by the destination country.

The hukou address does not always determine the only place where an application may be lodged. Some embassies also recognize an applicant’s genuine place of employment or ordinary residence, provided appropriate temporary-residence or employment evidence is supplied. Austria, for example, divides applications between Beijing and Shanghai jurisdictions and instructs applicants to use the centre corresponding to their actual residence or work location.

Additional Documents According to Travel Purpose

Tourism Visa

A tourism application may require:

Day-by-day or city-by-city itinerary;
Flight reservation;
Accommodation for the entire stay;
Personal financial evidence;
Employment or status documents;
Travel insurance; and
A cover letter explaining the proposed holiday.

An itinerary should remain realistic. Attempting to cover several distant cities in a few days may weaken the credibility of the plan.

Business Visa

A business file may additionally require:

Invitation from the European company;
Dates and purpose of meetings;
Details of the commercial relationship;
Employer dispatch letter;
Responsibility for expenses;
Trade-fair registration where relevant;
Chinese company license; and
Evidence of previous dealings between the companies.

The invitation, employer letter and application form should describe the same business purpose.

Family or Friend Visit Visa

The applicant may need:

Host invitation;
Host passport or identity document;
Host residence permit where applicable;
Proof of relationship;
Host address;
Accommodation confirmation; and
Sponsorship undertaking where the host will pay expenses.

A personal invitation does not replace the applicant’s obligation to demonstrate a credible purpose, lawful funding and intention to return.

Medical Visa

A medical application may require:

Acceptance or appointment from the European clinic;
Proposed treatment plan;
Estimated cost;
Proof of payment or financial means;
Accommodation details; and
Information about an accompanying person.

Visa for Minors

Applications for children may require:

Birth certificate;

Consent from a non-travelling parent;
Custody documentation where relevant; and
Notarization, legalisation or translation according to the checklist.

Requirements differ when a child travels alone, with one parent or with an adult who is not a legal guardian.

Step-by-Step Process for Applying from China

Step 1: Finalize the Genuine Purpose of Travel

Decide whether the journey is for tourism, business, a private visit, medical treatment or another permitted activity. The purpose determines the checklist and the consular authority.

Step 2: Build the Complete Schengen Route

List every destination in chronological order, including entry city, overnight stays, internal transportation and final departure point.

Step 3: Identify the Competent Schengen State

Apply to the sole destination, main destination or first-entry state under the applicable rules. Do not choose a country merely because appointments appear easier to obtain there.

Step 4: Confirm the Chinese Consular Jurisdiction

Check whether the responsible embassy divides mainland China into Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing or other jurisdictions. Use the area connected to the applicant’s actual residence or employment.

Step 5: Download the Current Category Checklist

Use the checklist linked by the responsible embassy, consulate or authorised visa centre. Requirements can vary by travel purpose and may change without being reflected on unofficial websites.

Step 6: Arrange the Travel Documentation

Prepare the proposed flight itinerary, accommodation, insurance and internal route. All travel dates should be mutually consistent.

Step 7: Collect Personal, Financial and Occupational Evidence

Obtain bank statements, employer documents, business records, school evidence, civil-status documents and any required translations.

Step 8: Complete the Application Form

Enter information exactly as shown in the passport and supporting records. Review dates, destinations, host information, occupation and the requested number of entries.

Step 9: Book the Appointment with the Authorized Provider

Appointments must be booked through the channel officially designated by the destination country. External centers collect applications and biometrics but do not make visa decisions.

Step 10: Attend the Appointment and Submit Biometrics

Applicants normally appear in person to submit documents, fingerprints and a facial image. Fingerprints stored in the Visa Information System may generally be reused for subsequent applications for approximately 59 months, although personal appearance can still be requested. Children under 12 and people physically unable to provide fingerprints are exempt from fingerprint collection.

Step 11: Pay the Visa and Service Fees

The standard short-stay visa fee is generally:

€90 for applicants aged 12 and above;
€45 for children aged 6 to 11;
No visa fee for children under 6.

Fee exemptions may apply to certain family members, students, researchers and other qualifying applicants. An external application centre may charge a separate service fee. Amounts collected in Chinese yuan can vary according to the applicable consular exchange rate.

Step 12: Track the Application and Respond Promptly

The embassy may request an additional document, clarification or interview. A prompt and precise response can prevent avoidable delay.

Step 13: Examine the Visa After Collection

Check:

Name and passport number;
Validity dates;
Number of entries;
Permitted duration of stay; and
Any territorial limitation.

A visa does not create an unconditional right of entry. Border officers may request evidence of accommodation, insurance, funds and the purpose of travel, so applicants should carry the essential documents during the journey.

How Early Should Applicants Apply?

A Schengen application may generally be submitted up to six months before the proposed journey. It should ordinarily be lodged at least 15 days before departure.

Applying only 15 days beforehand remains risky because:

Appointment availability may be limited;
Public holidays may interrupt processing;
Additional documents may be requested;
The standard decision period can be extended; and
Passport return may require additional time.

The normal processing period is approximately 15 calendar days, but an application may take up to 45 days when further examination is required. Applicants should therefore prepare well before the minimum deadline and avoid making non-refundable commitments before receiving the decision.

Austrian Schengen Visa from China

Austria accepts applications through its authorized VFS Global network in China. Applicants must select the centre connected to their actual residence or work location.

Austria divides mainland applications principally between the Beijing and Shanghai jurisdictions. Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui fall within the Shanghai jurisdiction, while the Beijing jurisdiction covers the remaining listed locations. Temporary-residence evidence may be required when applying outside the jurisdiction associated with the hukou.

Greek Schengen Visa from China

Greece accepts Schengen visa applications in China through Global Visa Center World (GVCW), its authorized visa application service provider. Applicants must complete and print the online application form available through the official GVCW website and then schedule an appointment to submit their application and supporting documents in person. Applications sent by post are not accepted.

Applicants should select a visa application centre operating under the appropriate Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou consular jurisdiction. A Greek Schengen visa application may be submitted up to six months before the intended travel date. Applicants must print their appointment confirmation and bring it to the visa application centre on the scheduled submission date.

Italy accepts short-stay Schengen visa applications in China through the Italy Visa Application Centre operated by VFS Global, the authorized external service provider for the Italian diplomatic and consular network. Applicants should submit their applications at a centre serving their place of residence and the competent Italian consular jurisdiction.

Italy’s visa application network currently includes centers in 15 cities across mainland China. VFS Global receives the application forms, supporting documents and biometric information, while the final assessment and visa decision remain the responsibility of the Embassy of Italy in Beijing or the competent Consulate General in Shanghai, Guangzhou or Chongqing.

Liechtenstein Schengen Visa from China

Liechtenstein does not operate an extensive independent visa network abroad. Visa-required applicants generally submit through the foreign representation authorized to represent Liechtenstein.

For most residents of China, this commonly means using the competent Swiss representation and its external filing route. However, Liechtenstein’s official representation table identifies a special arrangement for applications connected to Chongqing, where Hungary may act as the representing state.
